What are microplastics?
Microplastics are synthetic, high-molecular weight compounds that have been micronized into plastic particles smaller than 5 mm in size. Such materials have a low biodegradation rate and, thus, mostly remain in the environment and adversely affect the human body, the final consumer in the food chain.
Medical studies suggest potential risks like increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems, as well as potential impacts on reproductive health and developmental toxicity.Â
Here’s a more detailed breakdown of the potential health impacts:
-
Cardiovascular Issues:
Some studies suggest that microplastics found in plaque lining arteries may increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death.Â
-
Reproductive Health:
Microplastics and the chemicals they carry can interfere with hormone function, potentially leading to reproductive problems and developmental issues.Â
-
Cancer:
Microplastics and the chemicals they carry have been linked to an increased risk of cancer in animal studies, and some studies suggest a link to cancer in humans.Â
-
Inflammation and Immune System:
Microplastics can trigger inflammation and impair the immune system, potentially leading to various health problems.Â
-
Organ Damage:
Microplastics have been found in various organs, including the lungs, brain, and placenta, raising concerns about potential organ damage.Â
-
Neurotoxicity:
Microplastics can induce neurotoxicity, potentially leading to neurological symptoms and cognitive impairment.Â
-
Metabolic Disorders:
Microplastic exposure can lead to metabolic disorders and disrupt the body’s natural processes.Â
-
Chemicals in Plastics:
Plastics contain various chemicals, some of which are known to be harmful and can leach into the environment and into the human body.Â
-
Bioaccumulation:
Microplastics can accumulate in the body over time, potentially leading to long-term health effects.Â
-
Gut Microbiota:
Microplastics can disrupt the gut microbiota, which is essential for overall health.Â
-
Respiratory Issues:Inhaled microplastics can cause respiratory problems like lung cancer, asthma, and hypersensitivity pneumonia
How do we remove microplastics from your home?
Roughly 39% of the dust and debris in your home is made up of microplastics. Regular vacuuming / dusting / opening windows will not remove this material from your home…you need specialized vacuums and equipment to do so along with professionals who are trained to remove microplastics from home environments. Additional wiping down of all horizontal surface areas with specialized contaminant trapping materials is required. HVAC systems are inspected and cleaned thoroughly to catch any circulating microplastic particles and to insure mold contamination is not present.
As well, once you have reduced the existing microplastic load it is important to start to understand where these invasive contaminants are coming from. We can do this for you as part of our services. We can identify materials and hazards that are leading to this accumulation and provide you with methods, techniques and way of reducing exposure.
