Microplastics and Water – An unexpected finding

Research released this month has found that microplastics, when exposed to water, generated high-energy reactive radicals, (reactive oxygen), which, it is believed, contributes to why microplastics are making us sick.

How do high-energy reactive radicals, (reactive oxygen) make us sick? Well,  when high-energy radicals, such as oxygen, build up faster than the body can eliminate them what’s called oxidative stress takes place. On cellular level our cells can become disrupted and their structures can be shattered which can cause cellular death. DNA strands, when replicating, can produce genetic mutations and lead to the development of cancer cells. Enzymes, key to a normal human metabolism, can become mis-shapen and / or disabled.

Researchers have found deposits of microplastics throughout the human body, in every organ and in most every tissue sampled.

Health effects of this exposure is linked to dementia, heart attack and stroke risks. Further, microplastics disrupt their immediate environment, affecting water chemistry and disrupting biological cells of other living creatures.

What does this all mean?

Originally, it was thought that plastic makes a good packaging material because it was inert. We now know this is not the case.
