Bleach vs. EPA registered products
Bleach vs. EPA registered products – Is bleach really the cure all to killing surface mold and mildew?
Bleach has been used for years as the “cure” for mold and mildew problems however while bleach will kill surface mold, it will not get to the roots of the mold. Secondly, bleach itself is mostly made up of water and if you use bleach to kill the mold, you must make sure the treated area dries quickly, ideally within 24-48 hours.
Outdoors, do not use an oil-based stain on you cladding as oil-based stains act as a food source for mold. Use a stain that contains a fungicide if possible.
There are a number of products out there that can be used as an alternative to bleach however always pre-test these products before applying indoors or outdoors. These products include Sporicidin Disinfectant Solution, Microban, and Fosters 40-80. All of these products can be purchased at your local home improvement stores and are relatively inexpensive. Be sure to check which cleaner works best with the area that has mold as these products may cause stains or paints to fail.
